2. Exports on the rise for Fast track projects

Dealing with Exports is no longer hot news for Concept Steels having built both on our experience and quality service to serve key accounts worldwide.

Our response time and precision engineering is well recognised and established within the Oil, Gas and Offshore markets, but nevertheless, our team of experts and engineers associated with new machining capabilities face new challenges every day to meet the highest standards and specifications as SubSea depths exceed 2500m, placing ever-higher demands on materials technology.

Largeforged__super_duplex_swing_jointsOur range of materials and processes relating to these criteria are engineered to fit in any subsea systems or offshore projects. Whether it is a spool in AISI 8630 or a pulling head in A694 F65 or A182 F22, Concept Steels has the know-how for high quality in a highly technical, growing and competitive market.

More than ever before, delivering on-time has become even more crucial due to the large number of projects having tight production deadlines, further reinforced by the number of new deepwater hydrocarbon discoveries demanding investment at a fast pace.

Here at Concept Steels we endorse the “concept” of overcoming technical barriers or problems that can result from various materials, engineering or logistical aspects, helping to meet our customers’ technical demands and respect end users production deadlines.

3. New Area Sales Manager

To build on their success in Scotland and throughout Europe, Concept Steels Limited have appointed Martin Hill as the Area Sales Manager with responsibility for developing new business in England and Wales.

Coupled with this is a recognition that, although increasingly a global supplier of high specification steels and large machined parts, Concept Steels still believe it is essential to have a local capability that can respond quickly to the demands of today’s business environment.

With an established background in sales to the Oil & Gas, Power, General Engineering and Non-Ferrous Metal sectors, Martin will seek to leverage on his experience within these areas to offer additional services and materials to our existing customer database, whilst also expanding Concept Steels activity in the South. Martin can be contacted through the office, or directly by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

4. Cost Effective and Reliable

The make-or-buy decision has been with procurement and production managers for a number of years now, and traditionally concerned the basic considerations of purchase price, availability of capacity and strategic nature of the component supply.

With the introduction of lean manufacturing practices across so many industries and the increasing demands put on materials being used - particularly within the oil and gas sector - technical considerations and approval requirements result in the make-or-buy decision becoming even more complex.

Although still regularly supplying “hard to source” steel specifications in the forms of forgings, bars, plate, pipes, profiles etc., to a wide range of customers, Concept Steels Limited recognised that the market was changing and that we had to expand our offering to customers if we were to remain at the forefront of their supply chain.

With the need for suppliers to be approved and inspected at all stages of the manufacturing cycle, 'lean' manufacturers cannot necessarily afford the cost, (though perhaps more significantly, the time) to locate and approve a separate material supplier, machining company, test house facility etc., and this is where Concept Steels Limited has been so successful in fulfilling the requirements of the largest industrial concerns in Europe.

By utilising both our own Accura Group facilities or other specialist partners, and maintaining the highest levels of controls, Concept Steels can offer a cost-effective and reliable supply of large, complex machined parts, where we manage every stage of the supply, manufacturing and inspection cycle for our customers, thus allowing them to utilise their own personnel in what they do best.

5. "What does your Company do for us?"

This was the seemingly innocuous question posed by the CEO of an internationally regarded OEM within the power sector to the Sales Manager of an attendee at a recent supplier open day we attended.
Perhaps understandably, the salesman began to explain that they supplied the OEM with specific insulated parts, but before he could get very far, the CEO stopped him, saying that the supply of such components was what they were being paid to do - what he wanted to know was what else they did to warrant him using them as a supplier, rather than their competitor!

Those of us in the sales environment might feel some sympathy with the poor supplier, but it is a fact that manufacturers are expecting more from their supply chain, and if we are to differentiate ourselves from the rest, must consider they deserve more.

This is not a new 'concept' for Concept Steels Limited.

Through our considerable experience of steels and manufacturing, we can often assist our customers with a form of reverse engineering of components whereby we can offer advice on material forms that could be beneficial in reducing costs and lead-times, whilst still fulfilling the specification in its’ entirety.

Our customers can also use us as a reliable source of information when considering new components, as we are happy to advise at an early stage of the design process if the material under consideration will be readily available, or if another similar material might be a better option for them to look at.

So often it is the case that, once a material has been specified on a drawing, it becomes 'carved in stone,' and if it cannot be sourced without a special mill quantity cast being produced, the OEM can find itself facing extended lead-times or, at worse, expensive minimum order quantities that they were not expecting.

We are here to help... just ask.

7. Exhibition success in Asia

As part of Concept's continued export development programme, we were pleased to see many existing and future clients at the prestigious OSEA Oil & Gas Exhibition in Singapore.

The exhibition which ran in December 2010 specialises in offshore and Subsea activities, and as suppliers of high-spec forgings and exotic alloys to this industry, our presence at the show had a strong impact.

Many thanks to all of our visitors who took the trouble to attend.
